India 100MW Project

India 100MW Project

Utility-scale solar company SunBorne Energy and solar panel maker Suntech Power announced on Tuesday a deal to supply of 100 megawatts of solar panels for projects in India.

The agreement, which would occur over the next two years, stipulates that Suntech supply polycrystalline silicon modules rated at 280 watts peak for projects commissioned, designed and installed by SunBorne.

The significance of the deal? India's rising solar presence. With government support at the federal and state levels, both companies are eying the nation as an area with potential for tremendous cleantech growth; this deal is a way for each of them to get their feet wet.

The projects also align with the Indian government's target to reach a cumulative installation of 2 gigawatts of off-grid and 20 gigawatts of on-grid photovoltaic installations by 2022.

It certainly doesn't hurt that India is considered once of the best places in the world for the technology, with an average annual solar insolation reaching 2000 sun hours per year in some areas.

The deal kicks off with an order for 10 megawatts of solar panels for a project in Gujarat.
